What can people outside of Maine do to help pass the marriage equality bill?
Question:
LD 1020, Maine's proposed bill to allow gay marriage, will have its hearing on the twenty-fourth of April. If you live in Maine you can sign petitions, attend rallies, write to legislature, and go to the hearing. My question; does anyone know of any ways people outside of Maine can have their opinions heard? Thanks so much!

Answer:
Just positively advertise it to people living in Maine I guess. Spreading the word might bring in the votes.

What are the Maine laws regarding snow removal from sidewalks?
Question:
My grandmother (who is 80 years old) lives in public housing in South Portland. They have laundry facilities in a separtate building. She must walk at a slightly down hill angle down to the laundry building to do her wash. The sidewalks are not plowed and they have told her that they aren't going to do it this year, so she must walk in roadway. The roadway is plowed but it isn't that great. Does anyone have any information on what the law requires in Maine pertaining to snow removal?

Answer:
In most places that have snow, the property owner is required to keep sidewalks clear of snow that are on or abut their property. This is true in every place I have lived in Minnesota.

Question for others who have a Maine Coon?
Question:
Does your Maine Coon sleep more than other cats? I have a 9 yr old female retired showcat who is a Maine Coon, and she seems to sleep about 20 hours/day. She's done this since I got her 2 years ago. Just curious if extra sleep is a Maine Coon feature. She's super mellow & loving, my favorite of my 4 cats, although all are my babies.

Answer:
i also have a maine coon, and he is ALWAYS sleeping,if he's not sleeping then he's either cleaning himself or eating, lol.but he's old,he's 19,i don't expect him to be too energetic.if your really worried, you could take her to the vet,but i dont think theres anything wrong with her, every cat is different...

How are the general personalities of Maine Coon Cat and Norwegian Forest Cat different?
Question:
I know that each cat is an individual and is loveable in his/her own way. I'm just curious about whether there are any noticeable personality or behavioral differences between an average Maine Coon Cat and a Norwegian Forest Cat. I went to a few cat fancy websites, but they really weren't too forthcoming about this, whereas they were pretty chatty about a Persian's or Siamese's personality and quirks. Thank you in advance for your help and insight.

Answer:
I can not answer about the Norwegian Forest Cat. I can about the Maine Coons. The Maine Coon is a laid back cat, kittens are active and playful. Mine love lap time and grooming time. But this you have to start from the beginning and not wait till they need to be combed or brushed out. The same with nail clipping and this goes for any cat. Maine Coons are smart, and can be very goofy at the same time. Both are a natural breed meaning nothing has been changed to alter their looks. Maine Coons are devoted to their human parents and want to be with them. They will follow you room to room unless it is nap time. Really what you should do is call and talk to a breeder and ask them different question and write down what they say. Compare the 2 breeds and see what best suits you. Here are some web sites to help you also. http://www.cfa.org/breed-personality.htm… http://www.cfa .org/breeds/profiles/maine… http://www.cfa.org/breeds/profil es/norwe… R P CAT

Do i have to shave my maine coon cat in order to get rid of her fleas?
Question:
Someone told me that in order for me to get rid of my Maine Coon's flea problem that I'll need to shave her and then squeeze them all. On top of that I'll need to use Frontline. Is it really necessary to shave her?

Answer:
Absolutely not. No cat needs to be shaved of it's fur unless it has a serious skin condition like mange that needs to be treated from the skin out! Frontline will work, or Advantage. One product that I prefer is Revolution as it takes care of the heartworms, fleas, earmites and roundworms and is safe enough to give to a pregnant or nursing mother cat! I've had no problem with it at all where I have had some issues with the others. The one thing that needs to be done is to keep up with the treatments. One treatment is not sufficient and your entire household (carpets, his bedding, etc) will need to be be treated if the infestation is really bad. You can usually buy a product called Diatomaceous Earth at lawn stores or pool supply stores to sprinkle around the house in the yard - you can even sprinkle it in your carpet and it will kill those nasty fleas! There are some awesome natural ideas here (including some with the DE - http://www.stretcher.com/stories/01/010305a.cfm -- and many other natural flea 'killer' approaches that can be used on the web. But for heavy infestations, I would recommend starting with the chemical products until your cat is finally free of fleas, then maintain with more natural approaches if possible. Sometimes we live in areas where our neighbors are not as conscientious about their pets as we are and their pets will continue to infect ours so by keeping your yard protected and your cat (or dog) protected and indoors if necessary you can minimize the problem.

Do you know of volunteer spots in Maine in the summer for teenagers?
Question:
My cousin lives in southern or central Maine and he lives in a small town (low population rate) but wants to do volunteer work. He is 15 years old. Many volunteer places have actually turned him down because he is a teenager with little experience (in building, buisness, etc.) and it's actually hard to find places. So thanks.

Answer:
try hooking up with a service organization (red cross, hospital, a non-profit) they need lots of help and they usually don't turn people away.

Is a Maine Coon considered an expensive breed of cat?
Question:
I recently adopted this stray Maine Coon from the shelter that has been there for a few months apparently, but I've never seen this breed of cat until now. are they a rare breed of cat for their big size? Of course I love my maine coon either way, but he doesnt seem to share traits of other cats, and hes heavy 25 lbs males

Answer:
No - they're not rare. They're one of the most popular breeds of cats. With papers they sell for $600+ depending on whether they're pet quality or show quality. Did you get papers with this cat? If not it's VERY unlikely it's really a Maine Coon. It's probably just a domestic longhair. If it really was a Maine Coon I highly doubt it would have been at a shelter for a "few months". Though it's ethically wrong to do so many shelters say cats are a specific breed when they're not because it makes people more prone to adopt them. Is this why you adopted it - because you thought it was "worth" something? Post a pic and I can tell you whether this cat looks like a Maine Coon or not but I'm about 99% sure it isn't. It's also very unlikely it's a "mix". Cats were domesticated thousands of years ago and breeds only created in the last hundred or so years. So most cats don't have ANY breed in their background - they're simply "domestics". Breeders also tend to sell cats altered unless the cat's been chosen to be part of the cattery's breeding program and crossbreeding is never allowed. So you just don't end up with cats that are "part" a specific breed. I hope you're not going to let this cat free roam like you've done with your other cats http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AhNn1cu7bVRv0JPouQeq tcXty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090826181247AAVwsX2 Not only is against your contract with the shelter but I would think you'd learned your lesson since you've already lost one cat because you let it out - especially ridiculous that you did so at night when predators are feeding.
