Oregon?????????????????????????
Question:
I am writing a novel in a small town and I picked Oregon. I need to find a small city, maybe a few pictures be nice, and the name of a school close by.

Answer:
"On the west side I might suggest Monroe, Oregon. It's also small and is pretty close to Western Oregon university". Are you even from Oregon? Monroe is at least 70 miles from Monmouth, Oregon. You have no idea what you're talking about, do you? Monmouth wouldn't be a bad place to pick though, to answer the original questions.

Can I transfer from Eastern Oregon University to another Oregon university for in-state tuition?
Question:
I am planning on attending Eastern Oregon University, but I am not from Oregon and am considered an out-of-state resident. Could I transfer to another Oregon University after a certain amount of time for in-state tuition?

Answer:
If your main reason to be in Oregon is to attend college, no. At least at University of Oregon. You might get around the system if you had a job and paid income tax in Oregon.

Is there an Oregon law stating only natural parents may be called father or mother?
Question:
I have heard there is an Oregon Law stating only natural parents may be referred to as "mother" or "father" (or their equivalents) but have been unable to find such a thing in the Oregon Revised Statutes. The only thing I have found is mention of it regularly being in divorce decrees. Has anybody out there heard of an actual law explaining this?

Answer:
There is no statute in ANY state that requires this. The only way that could happen is through a court order in the form of injunctive relief. A natural parent, encouraging a child to call a step-parent mom or dad, is HEAVILY frowned upon by most courts.

How practical does University of Oregon to medical school sound?
Question:
I'm a junior in high school (California) and want to go to medical school. I might go to Oregon, or a Cal State school. What I'm wondering is how difficult would the transition be to go from Oregon to a medical school from UC Irvine for example.

Answer:
Oregon has a really, really good Biology department and Human Physiology department. I currently go to the UO and premed. Premed is not a major here, it is a subsection of the Biology department, as you may or may not know, you can go to med school with any major, you just need to have the requirements. We have several academic advisors dedicated to premed students. We also have that massive book that lets you know what each medical school is looking for. We also have this premed group called the Asklepiads (some greek god of healing). Every other week they have special guests talk, doctors to medical students. However, this group does set up job shadowing at the local hospitals. Surgery is hard to job shadow for, but apparently Emergency doctors are more than willing. The group works closely with Kaplan. Once, Kaplan and the club set up a suturing day with pigs feet. Kaplan also holds classes for MCATs for only $600... which is cheaper than the $2000 they usually charge. As for our Biology, they have huge labs underground. Students aren't allowed down there unless ur a research assistant, but they do a tour in the beginning of the year. We also have a cadaver lab. I heard our human physiology and anatomy courses are quite a great experience. Very hands on. I hope to take those courses nxt year. Now that i've promoted my school enough, ill try to get to your question. For public medical schools, state residents have a higher chance of getting in. Even though I go to Oregon for college, I am a resident of Hawaii because that is where I am a dependent and file my taxes. The rules for becoming a resident of Oregon are pretty tough. Basically, if you go to school in Oregon, you will still be a resident of Cali. I believe it is first and foremost about where you are from. It is definitely an experience to live in hippy Eugene, Or., an experience that isn't for a lot of people. You may also want to consider out of state tuition, if that will apply for you. Out of state tuition is deathly expensive. Eugene also has many resources such as HIV Alliance, Peacehealth medical centers, and Volunteers of Medicine surrounding campus for when you need to start on volunteer work. And start your volunteer work early! Sorry for the long response. I just wouldn't consider UO "mediocre".

What are mychances at getting into these oregon colleges?
Question:
University of Oregon, southern Oregon university, Portland state university, and Oregon state university. I have a 3.3 gpa and a 1650 say score. I run track and cross country and have 80 of community service and a part time job. Which one, school, would be best if I wanted to own my own fleet feet or Nike store?

Answer:
UofO and OSU are very competitive to get into but all you can do is apply. PSU and SOU are a shoe-in. I go to PSU right now and you can get in with a 2.0 GPA.

How do the marijuana laws compare between Oregon and Washington State? Which area is the most tolerant?
Question:
I am wondering about the marijuana laws for Oregon and Washington. I have heard a lot about Oregon being very tolerant of marijuana, and having their medical card program. I don't know much about Washington State's laws, and would like to know how it compares with Oregon. And of course if you want to weigh in on quality between the two states that is fine too :)

Answer:
I'm not sure about the rest of Washington (I know it's fairly lenient) but in Seattle, marijuana possession is officially the lowest priority for law enforcement. Hooray!

How does Oregon handle out of state traffic tickets? Specifically, a California speeding ticket?
Question:
I have an Oregon driver's license, and I received a citation in California for driving ten mph over the posted speed limit. How will my record be affected?

Answer:
The best advice is to avoid getting convicted in California, which you can do by going to traffic school online from Oregon. Find your California court here, and follow the "traffic" link: http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/courts/find.htm

Which states is Oregon least likely to extradite someone from for a gross misdemeanour?
Question:
In other words, which states are least likely to work with Oregon on this?

Answer:
Usually on a misdemeanor charge, the costs of fines, or restitution, do not cover the costs of extradition...it depends usually on what a maximum penalty is as per law, and the cost of extradition.... It also depends on reoffense, etc....first time offender would not get such a response, that a regular offender would get etc. Some crimes do not fall into either catagory, such as Domestic Violence, etc.... BUT, all that being said, there is no statute of limitations, when a criminal crosses state lines...the statute tolls and tolls, and would only come into effect when the offender comes back into the state of jurisdiction... It is easier on the conscience probably just to deal with the penalty, and move on with your life...in my opinion, rather than always watching over your shoulder, and worrying about extradition etc...

Is there an Oregon law that requires employers to place out a work schedule at a reasonable time?
Question:
I work at a small retail salon in Oregon, Multnomah county, and the work week goes from Monday through Sunday there. But the owner always fails to have the schedule out before the Sunday leading up to the next work week! Sometimes, I don't get my schedule until 11:30 Sunday nights. Is there a law stating that she must have the schedule out sooner and if so, is there a web site link?

Answer:
Nope. No such law. Richard

How is it that California and Oregon have a 9%+ income tax and Washington has no income tax?
Question:
I live in San Francisco and pay California's (in my opinion) outrageous 9.3% tax rate. In looking around I notice that Oregon has a 9% top rate while Nevada and Washington have no income tax. I know that Oregon has no sales tax, so that sort of explains things there. But can someone explain for me the basics of why California appears to be so much more expensive than Nevada and Washington? Is there some way as a California resident I can take advantage of something to avoid paying what appears to be thousands of dollars more than I would pay if I moved to Seattle? Alternately, is there some tax that they pay in Washington that I'm not considering? Finally, is it just that the California government is stupid and inefficient, or are they lacking sources of taxes that Washington state gets?

Answer:
Most of the difference has to do with Prop 13's effect on California. While anyone who purchases a home pays taxes on the current value of the property, someone who has lived in the same home for years is locked in at a much lower rate. For example, know of someone who purchased home in 1976 for $42,000. Property taxes are less that $250 a year. My property in Oregon is on the tax roles at $85000 and I pay $1300 a year. Like Cali, my tax increase every year at a minimum rate, but in Washingotn that's not the case. That said, yes, you can save tax dollars in Washington or Oregon over Cali. But you don't have the weather, job oppertunities, entertainment or sports activities that large numbers of people generate. For me, none of the reasons I mentioned was enough for me to want to stay in California or Washington. I much prefer the slower pace of life, the fewer people, and the reduced cost of living on the south coast of Oregon. No, I don't make the high salary I could make in either state, but I make what I need to live where i want to live.
