Vermont ...?
Question:
Interested in possibly taking a family trip to Vermont. What are some of the most popular attractions there? Isn't there a Christmas Village of some kind there as well? Thanks!

Answer:
The Christmas village is Santa's Land in Putney, VT and is on US Rt. 5. I live in Vernon, about 20 miles from there. Brattleboro has some interesting things. If you want to see the old, agricultural Vermont, pay a visit to Guilford. There are some nice farmstands and sugarhouses and such. Bellows Falls, Rockingham, Springfield, Pittsford, Rutland City, Charlotte, South Burlington, Burlington, Milton, Colchester, Chester, St. Albans, Essex Junction, White River Junction, and St. Johnsbury are some nice places to visit, too. The Connecticut River Valley is probably the most historic. The Champlain Valley (Burlington Metro Area) is probably the most urban, the Northeast Kingdom is probably the most scenic, and central Vermont is probably the most agricultural.

Who agrees that Vermont's legalization of gay marriage via the legislature was a huge blow to conservatives?
Question:
Who agrees that Vermont's legalization of gay marriage via the legislature was a blow to conservatives who scream "activist judges" whenever a state court legalizes gay marriage? Now they can't whine about activist judges in Vermont, since this was done by the people's elected representatives. Of course, the more important question now is: who will the conservatives blame now since they don't have the "activist judges" to pick on?

Answer:
Yes of course it is a blow to them, It signifies freedom for more Americans and that is contrary to their agenda of hate. Isn't it amazing how the do scream about judges when they use the same judges and policy's to promote their agenda! Sharon

What percentage should I get back for a vermont non-resident income tax filing?
Question:
I live in massachusetts but worked in vermont for most of last year. I paid taxes in both states but thats to be expected and not what im confused about. I thought that I would get almost all of my vermont taxes back but im only getting a very small refund. On top of that I'm getting a small massachusetts refund. My understanding was that i would get almost all of my vermont taxes back or it would be "credited" towards massachusetts taxes.

Answer:
Since you worked in VT, they are entitled to tax the income you earned there. And since you lived in MA, they are entitled to tax income earned anywhere. On your MA Form 1 return, you claim a credit for the VT taxes on line 12 of Schedule Z and transfer that amount to line 29 on Form 1. The amount of any refund is based on two things -- your tax liability and how much tax was withheld.

How is the living up in Vermont and New Hampshire?
Question:
I am a 24 year old male and am looking to relocate to another state at the beginning of next year. Vermont and New Hampshire are my top choices. I've heard both positive and negative things about both states, but that is to be expected from anywhere a person looks at moving. I currently live in North Jersey. Main areas of question are: Over all cost of living, what the people are like in general, job market (especially in Law and Law Enforcement), taxes, and entertainment. Of the 2, which would you think to be best?

Answer:
Both of them are great, I think that you would be happy in either state. They both have lots of winter recreation, there is also plenty to do in the summer. People in general are usually pretty friendly (at least in the small towns) and I think the cost of living, job market, taxes, and entertainment vary from which part you would like to live in. I'm pretty sure that in my town (Peacham, VT) the housing prices are pretty high. If you wanted a job in Law and Law Enforcement, then a city would probably be your best bet. Either that or the State Police.

When is the best time to visit Vermont and see the autumn foliage?
Question:
I am planning to visit Vermont with my parents on the October 12 weekend. Is this a good time to visit? I am planning to stay in the Smugglers Notch area.

Answer:
The first or second weekend of October. Typically, I recommend the first, because if you're early for foliage in the Champlain Valley, you can drive into the mountains to see them. You should be okay on the 12th, though it might be past peak in the mountains -- which means you and your folks could visit me in the Burlington area. :-) Enjoy your visit, Doug

Vermont bed and breakfast to see the leaves change in the fall?
Question:
My fiance and I want to take a romantic getaway to Vermont next year in early October. I was wondering if anyone could suggest the best parts of Vermont to visit because we have never been there. And/or any good bed and breakfasts there that people would recommend.

Answer:
Well, we are of course partial as innkeepers - but Brattleboro is a great home base for Southern Vermont. The timing is the most important part, prime foliage time is the very end of September through the middle of October, but can vary based on weather etc. There is some helpful information and a "foliage forecaster" here http://www.vermontvacation.com/seasons/forecaster.asp As for good B&B's (ours included of course) check out Trip Advisor or some of the other review sites for a good idea of the best places to stay. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g28966-Vermont-Vacations.html

Why is it illegal to transport liquor into Vermont? Does Vermont have its own vineyards?
Question:
I live in Chicago and was about to send my Mother-in-law a bottle of wine. Then I was stopped and told that I could not bring in or take out any liquor in Vermont. I just want to know why. I feel like this is Prohibition again. For such a liberal state that Vermont is, I don't understand this restriction.

Answer:
Because Vermont is a control state, it's illegal to transport it for resale. Not much can be said for one or two bottles. It's large amounts that strike up suspicion. You're fine sending your in-law a bottle.

What are the chances of good snowboarding conditions in Vermont at Christmas?
Question:
I want to plan ahead, but I'm not sure that Vermont will definitely have a good base by then. And which mountain would give me the best chance of good conditions that week?

Answer:
I went to Okemo last year on December 21st, and it was awesome. I don't go to VT a whole lot so I can't really say which mountain would be BEST, but I'm pretty sure any of 'em will do.
