How many days should I spend in Portland, Maine?
Question:
Hi, I'm planning a vacation to Maine for about 6-7 days. I'll be starting from Portland and ending in Bar Harbor. My plan is to stay in Portland for the first two days and in Bar Habor for 3-4 days, then returning to Portland for the last day. I'm not sure how many day/s is needed in Portland. Any suggestions? And any sites that I should definitely hit while I'm in Maine?

Answer:
Portland does have a great waterfront. You will need to see the Portland Head Lighthouse. It is one of the top 3 most photographed lighthouses in the lower 48. Remember, it will take about 4-6 hours to reach Bar Harbor from Portland depending on the traffic. If you are in no hurry, drive Coastal Route 1 It will be worth the drive. Otherwise, take I-95 to Bangor then across. In Bar Harbor you will want to spend as much time in Acadia National Park as possible. Three things that are a must for a short trip here are, Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and the top of Mt. Cadillac. Get a tide chart so you can try and make Thunder Hole when the tide is coming in. If you have time, try and do a bit of hiking on the old carriage roads. Also, just driving to the fishing towns is very interesting and relaxing. If you get out to Bass Harbor, please go the light house there. There is so much to see and enjoy, you will want to come back when you have more time I'm sure. The park has so much more to offer. There is a great Visitors Center at the entrance to the park. ENJOY!!!!

What is the best way to travel from New York City to Portland Maine and back?
Question:
I will be flying from Seattle to NYC in April and want to make a trip to Portland, Maine during my time there. Flying seems to be too expensive. What would you recommend for trains and/or buses? I've been to NYC before but never north of there. Thank you.

Answer:
Yes, the bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal near Times Square may be good alternative. The train is more expensive and at least with the bus, there is a bus heading to Boston most likely every hour and then you will connect to Portland from Boston. Jetblue is flying to Portland starting in May and the prices are reasonable ($59 one way).

where can i find good prom dresses in portland maine?
Question:
where can I find quality prom dresses that are attractive and affordable and that i can try on in person in the Greater Portland Area of Maine? any ideas will be great!

Answer:
Here's info from The Maine Mall, in South Portland: http://www.ps.mainemall.com/search?query=prom%20dresse s&linkid=topsrch There are a bunch of places in there that have things to look though, including David's Bridal. I'm a fan of theirs, I got a wedding dress there, they have great dresses, and they go from the supremely affordable to 'money is no object' - fantastic selection. Good luck!

Can anyone tell me anything about moving to Portland, Maine?
Question:
I am planning a move to Portland, Maine in the coming months. I would like to know any details you can give me about the area. is it expensive? where are the non-scummy places to live? where are the crime-ridden areas?

Answer:
east end and west end are where you want to be if you want to live in the city of portland---you'll avoid the scummy areas by sticking to these parts.. brief description, east end: stay north of washington ave( choose the area between washington and the eastern promenade) if you're south of washington ave you are in a scummy area, east end is closest to the ocean(casco bay, back bay, eastern prom,), very nice area.....west end is the most desirable part: victorians, cobblestone streets,etc... just about aby street is good there....both ends are walking distance to downtown(area known as the old port)...both ends are very safe-i see girls walking the bike path at 10:00pm by themselves with no worries, that would never happen in my hometown--in fact portland was voted recently as one of the top places for women to live though i am not sure how they rate cities based on that stat...rent is cheap compared to other places--you can get nice places for around 700-750, studios range about 600-650, and the rent goes skyward from there depending on what you want, if you have pets that could cause a problem, be aware that some rental properties are absolute dumps--this is a landlords market so they get away with stuff here they wouldn't in other places but with patience you'll find a nice place--start looking on craigslist and look for the areas i mentioned(east end, west end) there are other spots but if you want to be close to it all these areas are where to go...you'll meet cool people in these areas too--lot of people who live here are from somewhere else including myself

What are some things to do in Portland, Maine?
Question:
I was wondering what fun things there are to do in Portland, Maine. I am visting Maine for a week. I love it up there. I am staying in Wells. Any suggestions for fun things there?

Answer:
I live in Maine, so I know things....Go on the Ugly Anne deep sea fishing tour, they have a website too. It was sooo fun, and it's like the next town over from Wells. Go to Old Orchard Beach, they have tons of awesome rides, games, seafood, and a beach. Go camping for a night at the campground. Visit the large, and famous, stores: Cabelas in Scarborough and LL. Beans in Freeport. Go shopping for the day in freeport. In portland, takae the ferry to all of the surrounding islands. Go to the Old Port in Portland. Oh and the beach with the biggest waves is either Higgins beach or Scarborough beach. One time I went before a thunder storm and the waves were like Haiwii sized! Have fun!!
