What is the value of a Queen Elizabeth 10 New Pence 1968 coin?
Question:
It's in mint condition with a crowned lion on the back and the Queen on the front. On the font it has Elizabeth . II and D-G-REG-F-D-1968 On the back has New pence, a crowned lion. Also "New pence" I saw a coin alike on Ebay that was selling the coin with a very high price. Anybody know how much this coin is worth? Queen Elizabeth the II* I mean.

Answer:
That description is absolutely standard for the British 10p coin before the design was changed in 2008 - I have a few in my pocket now! It's not worth THAT much - a lot were made, though they're out of circulation now as the size of the British 10p coin was reduced in 1992. The British magazine "Coin News" reckons it's worth about £3, so about $5. There's a bit of historical interest there - when it was minted, "new pence" weren't the British currency. We changed from £1 = 20 shillings = 240 pence to £1 = 100 new pence (now just called pence as that was nearly 40 years ago!) in 1971, but to relieve pressure on the Royal Mint in replacing the entire coinage, some coins were introduced early and the 10p was one of them - it was worth exactly the same as 2 shillings and it was made to be exactly the same size as the existing 2 shilling coin so people would recognise it. 1968 was the first year in which they were made, and in fact 336 million of them were made that year - more than in any other year since, except for the minting of over 1 billion of the new smaller size in 1992. (We needed more than in 1968 - that's inflation!) I remember "D-Day" (Decimalisation Day) on 15 February 1971 well even though I was only aged 5 at the time - as you can imagine, changing the currency was a huge event and left so many people confused as they couldn't relate to the value shown by prices in shops any more, even though the pound remained the same. I remember the "old money" coins as well, though I never really used them as I wasn't old enough - I do remember my mother giving me a 3d coin every Sunday afternoon to put in the offering at Sunday School. Now that was a strange one - very thick for its size and it had 12 sides, not round. (To explain - old pence were d rather than p - it comes from the Latin denarius, a small Roman coin.) For some strange reason, one thing that sticks in my mind from then is the 5 minute public information films on TV all about it, and the jingle "six pence is two and a half pence mmmmmmm!" (because 6d = 2 1/2p). Of course "old money" totally confused tourists used to "1 big unit = 100 smaller units", like dollars and cents, and that was one reason for the change. Imagine something priced at 2/6. That meant 2 shillings and 6d, equivalent to 12 1/2p now. (Thanks to inflation, half pennies have been withdrawn as it became just too small a unit.)

I'm having a trip to NY, what is the best way to commute to from New York to Elizabeth, New Jersey?
Question:
I will arrive at Philadelphia, and stay for a couple of days, from there i will go to Elizabeth, New Jersey beacuse i already have a place to stay in there, so I will like to go to new york city, what would be the best way to commute to new york? and fron philadelphia to Elizabeth, NJ??

Answer:
- The IKEA shuttle is a nice suggestion... IKEA is located in Elizabeth NJ. If you can drive there, and take a shuttle, but the shuttle bus is really for NY people to shop in IKEA, it may have limited schedule. - Driving to NY is OK for the weekend. If you are visiting NYC with 3~4 people, it may be cheaper to pay for the Parking and toll comparing to train/bus ticket. Drive to NYC pay toll $6 and find a daily parking around $15, still use subway to travel inside the city. For Driving at the weekday is not recommended (too many traffic.) - Path does not reaches Elizabeth, but it is still not a bad idea to drive to Hoboken, Journal square or Newark to take path. It is the best way if you have a friend who can drop off and pick up you from path station to Elizabeth (Path info: http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/path/html ) - Train / Bus - this will bring you to 34th street or 42nd street in NYC. I remember the bus#113 stops at Elizabeth, and there are 2 train station in Elizabeth. If you stay close to a train/bus stop, it will be good for you. (http://www.njtransit.com for details)

Answer:
I always enjoy Farmers Market for fresh fruits and veggies. I did a search for your area and these 3 names popped up. I would call and ask if they have what you are looking for and if they don't ask who might. It may take 10-15 minutes of phone time, but could save you big in the end. Good luck! 27 Farmers Market 333 Rahway Ave, Elizabeth, NJ 07202-1806 (908) 355-0840 Dairy Farms & Produce 713 Rahway Ave, Elizabeth, NJ 07202-2211 (908) 289-1198 Giant Farm 1081 Elizabeth Ave, Elizabeth, NJ 07201-2543 (908) 352-1322

Is Elizabeth New Jersey a nice place to live with kids?
Question:
I am moving from Houston, Texas and won't really get the chance to check it out in person. The rents look cheap, and overall the town looks nice. Plus, there is public pre-k and the schools look consistently good. Am I on target here? Is the whole town nice, or are there some parts that wouldn't be so good for kids? I need to commute to NYC for work...Thanks!

Answer:
I wouldn't recommend Elizabeth, especially for someone bringing kids here. To sum it up "you get what you pay for". Its one thing if you are a struggling young person and don't mind a grungy higher-crime area until you can get on your feet and move out, but if you have kids - DON'T DO IT!

How is Elizabeth, New Jersey, to live with small children and to commute to Manhattan??

Answer:
We lived in Rockaway N.J. for 5 years while my husband commuted to Manhattan. It was a 70 minute train ride each way but the benefits of living in the country were wonderful. If you live ANYwhere near Newark in any direction you will have high crime, old, dirty neighborhoods and mostly minorities, auto theft. The schools are bad because of social problems. I would not feel good about leaving my kids in Elizabeth while I was gone all day, with or without day care/sitter. Go west to a small town where you can have peace of mind, neighbors you can trust, a lawn &garden if you want and houses not so close together. The commute is only a bit longer and you can take the train. Parking in NYC is UNbelievably costly and scarce. New Jersey can be nice but you must get away from NEWARK. Please look into towns off of Hwy. 80, like Dover, Denville, Rockaway but not Morristown. It is now having problems like Newark. Email me if you want. (Click my pix.)
